If it was fun it there would not be suffering with each step, the throat will not burn and most people would look forward to it. Why is it that people run? What is it that I started to run? I started running when Hiroko left for her 5 week trip to Japan. I wanted to get fit, loose fat, and get closer to the magazine look. I figured running will be a great tool to loose the pounds I’ve gained over the last 6 months. Ever since Hiroko got pregnant we have been spending less time climbing and being active. We just stay home, eat and watch TV. Over the last 4 weeks I have ran twice a week. It started with a 2 mile run that was super miserable and now have completed a 6 mile run that is physically less painful than the first run. Do I find running fun? No! But for some reason I do look forward to it. Maybe it is the challenge of beating your previous time or distance.

Either way I figured I start taking running seriously and I purchased a Nike+ Sportwatch GPS. I used it yesterday on a run and it worked really well.

Distance: 4.08 Miles
Duration: 35:10
Average Pace: 8:37/ mile
Fastest Mile: 7:25
Elevation Gained: 439 feet

Another Hirokoless Weekend

<dc:subject>Home</dc:subject>

Last weekend was my first Hirokoless weekend. This is my second. Not having hiroko around is difficult. A week is a long time when we normally see each other everyday and the longest consecutive days apart since we’ve been married is 14 days. What am I to do? Well, I woke up early and went climbing at The Factory, Louie Anderson’s and Val’s premiere Southern California bouldering gym. Then I went to Wilson’s to help him move. After some heavy lifting and an injured finger (Jen’s, not mine) I headed off to Alhambra for Loren’s surprise birthday party. It was great seeing Loren, and friends. Aaron, Josh R., Karina, Oscar, and more were there. 1 week down, 4 more weeks to go.

Val’s the Boss!

Downtown Alhambra from top of parking structure.

Too dark to take a non blurry picture, but you can see Loren on the left.

Potluck?

<dc:subject>Home</dc:subject>

In the morning I dropped hiroko off at the airport. She will be in Japan for the next 5 weeks. So sad, but I’ll keep busy.

Earlier this week I was invited to Karina’s birthday potluck by Oscar and I’ve been looking forward to this all week. Since I needed to go to bed earlier I made sure I was there right when it started so I can head home a bit earlier, but still have enough time to hang out with Karina. I figured that I would be the few that arrive on time, but when I got there i noticed that there was very few cars parked outside. As I walked towards the door I also noticed Oscar in the kitchen prepping for dinner, but no one else. I rang the door bell. No one came. I gave it about a minute and rang again. Oscar answers the door and give me a surprised and awkward look. This was when I realized that something was awry. Quickly I realized that I was there the wrong day. I was two weeks early One of the most awkward and embracing moments in my life has just taken place. Luckily Oscar was very kind and gracious. He invited me in and we chat some before Karina came down stairs and learned of the funny mistake I made. Karina and Oscar made dinner for me and we enjoyed a healthy and delicious dinner. I’ll be back in two weeks.

Oscar, Karina, and I

Easter Weekend Escape

<dc:subject>Home</dc:subject>

Good Friday was indeed good. I was blessed with a Friday off and a wonderful three day weekend. Since Hiroko’s pregnancy we have been mostly staying at home and resting, but not this weekend. Hiroko started feeling better for the long drives so we had many random things planned for this weekend. We started our 3 day weekend with some bouldering at The Factory, Louie Anderson’s new gym. We were invited to do some climbing before they had officially opened the gym. I tested my atrophied muscle and hiroko stayed low with traverses. The gym is right off Katella and the 57. It has not been completed but it is already a great gym. After climbing we headed over to the local brewery for some dinner.

Dinner with Victor Gee, Kenny Suh, Ramesh Elam, Eloy Herrera, Hiroko and Ernie Leal

The next day we woke up with the general plan to head south and meet up with Ernest Quiambao. We started the morning slow. We make a stop at Mad Rock to catch up with friends and then headed to the world first McDonalds. It was not too special, but it is where production line fast food began. Hiroko and I enjoyed some not so healthy burgers.

What happened to the other arch?

Hiroko inside the McDonald Museum.

Cheeseburger and a hamburger please.

Yum!

After MaDonald we headed down to the great park to walk Teddy and Toffee and hopefully ride the world’s largest helium balloon. The balloon was all booked up by the time we got there, but we still had a good time check out the vegetable garden/farm. Toffee even made friends with the local chickens.

Teddy and I waiting for Hiroko.

Toffee and chickens.

The drive to San Diego was enjoyable. The weather was great and the pace leisurely. We hung out with Ernest and his family. Then we headed to the Fish Market to grab some clam chowder. 1 quart and a loaf of bread for 8 bucks. What a deal! Hiroko, Ernest and I were full and happy. Next morning we visited the local farmer’s market which was more like a flea market, but it was still a great time with my wife and friend.

We took the clam chowder to go and had it on a bench overlooking the beach.

Getting the dogs ready for the Farmer’s Market.

CX-5 Competitive Showdown

<dc:subject>Home</dc:subject>

There are a few perks to working for Mazda. One of which is test driving new cars and pushing its limits. Today we had the chance to test drive the 2013 CX-5 against the competitors such as the Honda CRV, Nissan Rogue, and Hyundai Tucson.

Cars are lined up on the great park air strips

Refinement and performance = 2 performance courses

There was two courses set up. One to test performance and the other for refinement. After the first few laps they both became performance tests. After some rubber burning maneuvers and reaction testing turns I can attest that the CX-5 is not only better in terms of handling, but also in ride quality. We all left the test track with a smile on our faces.

Getting ready on the performance course.

Results of course are smiles.

Pure adrenaline!
